I have never had issues with Linksys or Orinoco cards.  I have been
using them for a couple of years now.  I have a Compaq HNW-100 I use for
sniffing and seems to work ok (still Prism2 chipset).  I have not had
the problems you describe.  Part of the issue may not be the PCMCIA
card, but the PCMCIA bridge drivers.
