Not an answer to your question, but....
why not use IMAP and leave the mail on the server. You just
download the headers and then pull the messages that you
want to read.
IMAP also lets you use multiple interfaces ( Ximian, web, home,
office, etc ) to access your mail. You see the same mail from
any interface. You can put mail in folders ( sent mail ) for
example and access this from home, work, or the airport ( via
web kiosk )
