[NTLUG:Discuss] Something to ponder (bad Linux enterprise experience article)

The main reason I suppose that I posted the article is
that I just got done demonstrating a new Linux laptop
to their new owners. Needless to say there were
quite a few questions. For me... the stuff is easy...
but even setting up a printer in CUPS (which is
pretty easy you'll have to admit) becomes a
stumbling block when the user doesn't know if
the printer is a HP JetDirect, Samba or LPR/LPD.
It's even worse when you have to describe how
to setup cups to start at the default runlevel
that the system boots into (empty stares from
the audience). I think the author of the editorial
comment came at Linux looking for a one-for-one
M$ clone... a bad assumption.... but you know,
that's probably how the world (in general) would
approach Linux.
I just got done reading an article comparing
OS/X, Windows and Linux... their conclusion is
that OSX beats the others hands down (not even
close) in ease of use and just usability... but I
doubt that everyone is going to out an by that G5
machine tomorrow. And I'm certainly not carting
my Linux box to the junk heap.
One thing I've learned is if someone has a
bone to pick with you, you need to listen and
examine yourself closely even if at first you
don't think there is a shred of truth in what
is being said.
Is the article somewhat typical of the non-Linux
crowd?... I would say it's fairly typical... so
to me... it's worthwhile to do a bit of self-examination.
