Don't know, I don't use Evolution and I don't use lpd.

SuSE switched to CUPS, I switched to CUPS.  CUPS is neat for
enterprise level printer management.  It has its share of bugs.
Run the latest if possible... or latest supported copy from
your dist.

Can't say how well CUPS will work with your printer.
I have an Epson C80.  My clients use it primarily with HP Jetdirect
networked HP Laserjets (many of which have PostScript).... though
I have configured CUPS to work with some old dot matrix line
printers as well.
