I think it would be unusual for a firewall system to have the compilers
and kernel headers needed to compile drivers. That would be far from
'minimal'. You are generally expected to compile on another system, if
you need to. I'm not familiar enough with smoothwall to know how you
would do this.
Which version of Smoothwall are you using? Version 2.0Beta seems to be
based on Redhat 8.0 so you might be able to get binary drivers that you
could copy. (BTW, it is correct about using the tulip driver).
I also found some references in the Smoothwall mailing list and support
forum suggesting that the Linksys cards work fine with Smoothwall 1.0
but not with 2.0 so that may be your problem. Also, is it possible that
your card is just broken?
