Howdy,
  I wonder if a firewire drive might work well for this.  Would it be
reasonable to ask the user to swap a firewire cable from one system to
another?  If you do this, don't use one of the little cases that handle
only laptop drives.  Laptop drives are too slow.  Get one that holds a
3.5 inch drive and use a good one.
