Hi Ralph.

Easy,

Yast2 --> System --> Runlevel Editor

In 8.2 you then had to click on "Run Level Properties" to get the tool to edit which Init Scripts ran during startup.  They redid this part with 
9.0, I think you just have to find the mysqld and enable it.

On re-reading your email, it looks like you are saying there is no init.d script?  That can't be right, although for compatibility with older 
systems, SuSE has two places for init.d scripts.  You might also want to have a look around the mysql install directories, as they may have shipped 
the scripts but not installed them.  While I am familiar with SuSE, I am not that familiar with mysql.
