This is an rtl8139 (realtek, the cheapest of the cheap.. no offense, just fact).
Make sure that the rtl8139 module is loaded and then try doing some
online configuring.

For example....

If the module is loaded (check with lsmod)....

dhcpcd eth0

to attempt dhcp.... You can try initially direct off your cable
modem (without a dsl/cable fw/router)... then if that works,
you should be able to do the same, BUT you may have to clone
the MAC address out off your card and into your dsl/cable router
appliance.

Realtek 8139, unfortunately is not a fixed target... that is
to say that not every 8139 device is like every 8139 device.
I've had some that worked better than others... but have never
tried the SMC device you have listed.  Most of mine have been
onboard.

Does SUSE 9.1 work with the realtek 8139... absolutely, my
Cappuccino G1 uses a 8139 device and works just fine with
SUSE 9.1 (well... as good 9.1 can get anyway).
