[NTLUG:Discuss] Re: Mac v. Linux

So, as I understand it from this thread, I can have a unix-like os in
a cool case that has a really neat gui that runs proprietary apps for
a butt-load more money than what I paid. I also get the idea that my
mom (81 now), my wife, daughter, grandkids and others that are very
non-technical cannot like the linux systems that they are all running
because it is too hard. I must have missed something along the way.

Two days ago I stopped by the daughter's place & g'kid #2 asks how to
play an .avi file. I showed her how to click, click, click and set up
file associations in KDE. It was way easy for her and once done,
mplayer launched every time. Last I saw of her she was watching the
movie. (I reminded her to rtfm, of course)

As for ease of adding software, linux keeps improving. Just look at
all the improvements in the past 5 years, for example.

Yes, Mac may make some inroads but as long as Linux development
continues and the price stays down, Linux will always have market
share. I have always thought that Apple had good products but that
they were way over priced. Nothing that they have done lately has
changed my opinion of them.
