Well sure it "excels", it's written for only a few pieces of hardware.
Linux "excels" too but works on lots and lots of hardware
configurations.
It's rumored, (and more than likely true), that OSX was prompted by
the Yellowdog project. Yellowdog was a very successful and the Apple
developers, (not being all that stupid), saw great potential in a Unix
like system, especially when considerig the availability of hundreds
and hundreds of open source applications - it was a no-brainer.
