Some KVM's don't maintain power to the mouse as they switch from one PC to
another. Some mice don't care - but others suffer a reset and because
neither PC provides them with an initialisation sequence, the mouse either
doesn't work or behaves weirdly.

Your various tricks that fix the problem are presumably fooling the software
into sending another initialisation string.

It's hard to track the problem down because it requires BOTH a KVM that glitches
the power AND a mouse that needs an initialisation string. Hence, changing to
a better KVM or a different mouse might fix it - but it's a bit hit and miss.

The same thing can happen with keyboards too.
