every file I copy from cd to hdd or from hdd to hdd(same or different 
channel) the speed starts at full speed and immediately drops to 30KB/s 
or so and even stalls at times.

/dev/hdc ... SONY CD-RW CRX230E
/dev/hdd ... WD102AA

ABIT NF7-s v2

all drives show dma and 32bit and proper setting for MaxSecTrans
