[NTLUG:Discuss] IFCONFIG missing

Guys,

I got hit by lightning last night and my Linksys router got taken out. It
appears that my NIC card in my new computer also got taken out, even though
the computer wasn't on at the time. However, I can't tell for sure, so I'm
in need of some advice.

I'm running Fedora Core 3 64bit on an AMD 64 with built in NIC card. As
far as FC is concerned, the NIC card is ok...status under Network Control
GUI says it's ok, I can ping the LO and I can ping the static IP I have
assigned to the onboard NIC, but it will not connect to the LAN. I had a
spare Netgear Wireless router I wasn't using, so I replaced the Linksys
with it (the Linksys was really a glorified switched hub...I wasn't using
the WAN port on it since it was dead and I have a hardware firewall running
Smoothwall). My other 3 computers, the firewall, my wifes Weenderz box, my
dual boot Win98/FC1 box all come up on the Netgear ok, they connect and can
surf, but the port my FC3 box is connected to never lights up. I've
checked to make sure it's not the port on the Netgear by connecting working
machines to it and the port lights up and the computer runs. I've tried
different CAT5 cables that I know work on other computers, still no go.
It's like the OS logically sees the NIC card just fine, but the actual
physical interface is toasted.

I have tried opening a terminal window and running ifconfig eth0, but
always get a message that ifconfig is not found. When I check the help in
bash, ifconfig is not a configured command. So, I have 2 questions.

1. What happened to the ifconfig command I've been so used to in other
versions of RH/FC?

2. Is there anything else I can try with this motherboard to revive the
NIC? I can always buy a PCI NIC card, but would prefer to keep using the
onboard NIC and save the PCI slot for something else down the road.

Obviously, I'm at work and can't connect to the box in question, nor can I
send anything out from the box in question, so I guess if I need to post
command responses, I'll have to issue them in a terminal window, copy them
to a text file, put them on a floppy and bring them into work to send to
you.

As always, thanks for all your help,
