I know there is only a savings of $5 by not getting Windows installed. I
just refuse to send any money to Redmond if I can help it - the
inconvenience, cost or anything else does not matter... to me.

Besides, I have a sinking feeling the tax is already paid at the
component level. Do component mfgrs pay (per item sold) for Windows
"certification?" Maybe M$ uses the VAT approach. ;-) That way they can
make money no matter what OS is installed. The money is already in the
bank before the hardware is assembled. Just a guess though.

I'm thinking a PCMCIA "real" modem is my only hope here. I believe most
laptops have Win modems and they seldom work with Linux. Besides,
everyone has broadband or wireless or both now (except me) :-/

Emperor Linux does look good. They are a little more expensive though.
They may be worth it though.

Thanks for the tip on the battery. Maybe a mid-size model is best.
