If you buy a new laptop with Vista pre-installed, it will work fine with
grub as the boot loader and a standard installation (I have tried
Fedora, CentOS and Ubuntu).  I have done this on a few machines now.

New pre-built machines will come with Vista.  To get XP, which is highly
recommended, you will have to buy an older machine or custom order it.

BTW, Vista sucks ass, but as long as you have at least 2G of ram, it
will be usable.
