Allen, one thing you'll have to get used to with any variety of *nix is
a MAJOR difference with Windows, file names are case sensitive. Windows
isn't case sensitive, so filenames like...

Stopper
stopper
sTOPper
stoppeR

are all the same file, In *nix (Linux, Unix, the BSDs, etc), filenames
ARE case sensitive...hence....

Stopper
stopper
sTOPper
stoppeR

is 4 different, unique files. See how limiting Windows is? :)

So when you typed "allen at allen-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get install
Kubuntu_desktop", the system literally couldn't find Kubuntu_desktop
because that file doesn't exist. It's actually kubuntu-desktop (yes,
the - also makes a difference, as it would in Windows too).

If you're willing to keep learning and don't give up, I think you'll
find the *nix way of doing things makes MUCH more sense. It's
definitely different, but I think the directory structure and OS
philosophy of the *nix family is much more logical. I still have a LOT
to learn. :) Stay with it. The rewards are worth it.
