[NTLUG:Discuss] Starting an open source project

Sorry it's taken me so long to get this to the list.

As I mentioned during the last meeting, I'd like to see if anybody would be interested in helping with some ideas for software projects that I have in mind.

The scope of the projects that I'm interested in working on is to make Linux applications easy for newbies to administer via web interfaces (sorry guys, not everybody knows how to or wants to go to a shell). Sometimes even Webmin is too much to comprehend at times.

The first project I tackled is EasyIDS (http://www.skynet-solutions.net/easyids) which is a customized CentOS install cd for installing Snort. I have gotten quite a bit of positive feedback on the project and am looking for 1-2 other people that might be willing to help and double-check my work.

A couple of the projects I have in mind are:

A CentOS based install cd for Squid/Dansguardian with an accompanying web interface to make configuration and reporting much easier. A similar project is CensorNet (http://opensource.censornet.com/) but they have decided to discontinue work on their open source version plus it requires some sort of authentication method for end users instead of transparent ntlm.

A CentOS based install cd for webhosting with e-mail/ftp/http/etc and a web-based control panel for administration. I had previously set this up using Ispconfig but it didn't seem to draw much interest so I haven't worked with it in the last year.

Lojack for Linux (LinJack?, thanks Hanz). I'm aware of Adeona but would like to make it easier for basic users to use. Plus take it a step further and integrate rsync to add the ability of recover files when the user has flagged the laptop has been stolen. With Linux based netbooks selling like hotcakes this year, this might be a good one.

If anybody is interested in working together then give me a holler. I'm part-owner of a hosting company so I have access to some hardware/software resources if needed.

Thanks,

Cory
