If it is indeed a problem with X and / or display resolution you might
check to see if sax2 has designated the sis driver in xorg's config
file for you.
You should see Driver "sis" your newly created /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.
  grep sis /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Should return:
   Driver "sis"
If not try
   grep Driver /etc/X11/xorg.conf
and see what it tells you...
If it says something different, you might be running just the generic
video driver, "vesa" so.. you could just change it, or go back to
sax2 and tinker with that some more...

You might need a modeline in the xorg.conf file but I doubt it ... the
ViewSonic looks to be a fairly standard, (17" right?) and looks like
it will do 1024x768 or 1280x1024 You might alternate between 1024x768
and 1280x1024, see if that makes a difference.

You might also find some additional info or some sort of clue that will help in:
    man sis

You could also try viesonic.com and see if they have support info with
suggested resolution / frequency settings.
