Is reinstalling such a bad thing? Back up your data... your web browser
configs, your email, your contacts, your documents... they should all
get backed up anyway. After that, it's just a matter of running the
install process again. How about getting a spare hard drive and install
into that to see if you can get the tweaks right this next go around.
And if you can, you will know exactly what to do when you do a full
reinstall with guaranteed success.
