Fedora 14 has a history of issues regarding its HDMI use, What video card is in the HP? do you have a rundown of or a listing of some lines from lspci -nnk shows or sudo regarding your video drivers? This will show if you are using the current drivers for your video card and if drivers are installed correctly to start. Im hoping I can help you from there. That or go and be sure you have current drivers, this may fix the problem on its own.
Also try xrandr --output HDMI1 --auto

Subject: [NTLUG:Discuss] Video Output to HDMI on Laptop
Attempting to use the HDMI output on my HP Laptop running Fedora 14 to
connect to the TV monitor. What I have so far:
xrandr
LVDS-1 -- screen, has multiople resolutions and working fine
VGA-1 -- disconnected
DVI-D-1 -- disconnected
HDMI-1 -- disconnected
Fedora is evidently detecting the HDMI interface from the above.
I attempted to activate the HDMI with the command
xrandr --output HDMI-1
got back the prompt with no error message, but on xrandr display the HDMI is
still disconnected.
I have attempted this both with the TV connected and without, so not sure of
what is the issue (besides headspace).
I have also attempted to use the System Settings - Display & Monitor - Size
& Orientation. It shows the above four connections, but when clickin go
HDMI-1 the other options are blocked out and I am not able to specify
values.
BIOS has no setting for the HDMI interface.
Appreciate guidance.
