[NTLUG:Discuss] Video Output to HDMI on Laptop

I can't vouch for HDMI, but on VGA on my laptop, I have to have the
cables connected and the TV live in order for the laptop to detect the
external VGA interface during boot. To get everything to work right:

 1. Turn off laptop and connect external video cable (VGA, HDMI).
 2. Turn TV to appropriate input device (VGA, HDMI). It seems the BIOS
probes for something actually connected to the external video
connector and not all TV's will acknowledge this if they aren't
    turned to the correct input.
 3. Turn laptop on (BIOS detects the external video at this point)
 4. Continue boot up to OS of choice (this is true for Ubuntu, Slackware
and Windows XP). The OS gets fed there is an additional external
    video device from the BIOS.
 5. Set up 2nd video, which may require doing the function key and
external video key on the laptop.

I'm assuming the HDMI will behave the same as VGA in the above.

Good luck!

Alvin
