Howdy,
  I should add that I can see a mechanism for a problem when adding
files, but I think it is less likely to happen.  Since my goal is to
come up with a strategy that may help with updating your sets of
pictures, I wanted to understand the failure mode better.  Testing
whether adding pictures alone causes a stall helps me understand
better.  Getting the source to geeqie and looking it over will help,
too.  I just did not have time for that tonight.
