Thank you for your reply ... and the tip on the Apache OpenOffice bug, 
which seems to have been carried over into LibreOffice as well ... I 
shall try that out.

Unfortunately, while the printer does have a manual feed with envelope 
guide, the minimum size media is 3.5x6.5 inches, and the checks are 
2,75x6.25 inches ... too small in each direction.

I am working (as a work around) at developing a carrier out of a sheet 
of 8.5x11 overhead transparency stock ... positioning and holding the 
check in slots cut through the clear stock.  So far I have one long slot 
at the feed end to hold the leading edge of the check, and I am now 
going to add a couple of small diagonal slots to hold the tail end (keep 
it aligned properly ... the single head slot doesn't quite do the 
alignment part.  Not magic, but I hope it works ... more testing ahead.
